[Home page] [General topics, links, etc.] [Army, Army Air Force] [Navy, Naval Air Force] [About author, my contacts, my publications]
Source: TM-E 30-480: Handbook on Japanese Military Forces. Technical Manual, U.S. War Department, October 1, 1944. Plus some of additions by Eugen Pinak.
Due to the ease of writing Japanese military abbreviations usually used Latin, not Japanese letters. Another peculiarity is that some of them originated not from abbreviated Japanese words, but from abbreviated European words (usually German for the IJA and English for IJN). For example, abbreviation “fg”, describing IJN aviation unit, has nothing to do with its Japanese name “kokutai”, but everything with English “flying group”.
